Goodman Community Center
Sketch by Elsie.
The actual wood sculpture is located in the entrance to the Goodman Center. It is by well-known local artist, Harry Whitehorse. He is known for his wood and metal sculptures; as well as oil paintings. He will often use images related to his Hochunk Heritage. He has done a number of projects in which he has carved with the remains of a significant size tree. He would also involve local people and children in the process of defining the images for a sculpture, which he then interpreted into a finished piece.

First Christian Church design by Frank Lloyd Wright
Completed in 1973. The roof and spire rise seventy seven feet
and are supported by 23 slender pillars. There is also a 120 ft
free standing bell tower. Each side of it is unequal to the others
and the tower appears to be a triangle from any vantage point.

Another New Sketching Book
Yet another new book on sketching; this one is by Katherine Tyrrell author of the excellent art blog "Making a Mark". Katherine lives in London and features blog entries about a wide variety of subjects concerning art in the UK and around the world and the US in particular. Her usual medium is colored pencil but on her blog there are links to the blogs & websites of artists who work in many mediums. Again many of those artists are from the US. Her blog has a wealth of info and instruction about drawing and painting and I would imagine her new book will be an excellent resource. Katherine is also a member of Urban Sketchers London. Her new book features the work of over 50 international artists. I think the publication of Katherine's book, like the new one by Urban Sketcher Marc Holmes, is a reflection of the urban sketching "movement" which seems to be growing every year which is very encouraging (and a lot of fun).

It was wonderful sketching today at Brittingham Boathouse...along with the canoers, kayakers, paddle boards, boaters and those just enjoying the sunny warm weather on the shoreline. The staff were happy we choose to sketch there and invited us back. There were seven of us sketching with Draw Madison: Betty, Dina, Deborah, Gretchen, Vickie, Dan and Louise.

Paoli - Sketch Meet July 13th
Lovely day in Paoli and great to meet Gerrardine and Dan. The Exquisite Corpse show in the Cooler at Artisan Gallery was really outstanding. Unfortunately Zazen Gallery was closed so could not see Jan Norstetter's new still life show but what we could see through the window looked beautiful. After 3pm Gretchen and I went up Observatory Rd. and painted for a couple hours. Very breezy and great clouds passing over.
